In civil design, the biggest cost overruns typically come from small details that were never fully verified before construction.These issues often surface when grading begins or when utilities are installed and nothing quite lines up the way the plans intended. By that point, the fix is no longer a detail. It becomes excavation, reconstruction, and coordination with the municipality under pressure.

A lot of engineering firms spend most of their time talking about themselves: credentials, innovation, track record. Those things matter, but when PSE Designs became a full-time consulting engineering firm in 2012, we made a different decision about what would drive the work.

Specialty equipment and new building systems are often introduced with impressive performance claims. Vendors highlight efficiency, capacity, and simplified installation, which can make a product look like an easy choice. However, these claims typically focus on the equipment itself, not how it will integrate with the rest of the building.

Selecting HVAC equipment based only on nameplate tonnage, rather than verified building load calculations, often leads to performance issues. Systems that are oversized for the actual load can short cycle, struggle to control humidity, and create inconsistent indoor conditions. Over time, this can increase energy use and reduce equipment life.
